Mondseeland Local Heritage Museum & Pile Dwelling Museum

More than 5,000 years ago people erected pile-dwelling settlements in this area. Today, the relics of an outstanding cultural period can still be admired at the Pile Dwelling Museum. Additionally, the Locale Heritage Museum focuses on the history of the local Monastery, founded in 748, and its renowned Writing School. Due to Mondsee´s location right on the shores of Mondsee Lake, fishing has always played an important role in the town´s history.

Among the highlights ranks a special exhibition on Meinrad Guggenbichler, a famous master in the art of Baroque sculpture. Exhibits on display in the ancient Monastery´s Library include photographs and documents.

The most important exhibit on display is the authentic Mondseeland farmstead and its numerous in-house exhibitions. The building itself is made of wood and comprises the living area, the stables and the barn, all under the same roof. Every room is fully-equipped with tools, things of everyday life and farm machinery providing the visitor with insights into the way of life on a traditional farm. The grain was stored on the upper floor and - thanks to the missing flue - also dried by the smoke. Therefore, the original name of this Mondseeland farm type was "Rauchhaus" (Smoke House).

Collegiate Church at Mondsee, site of filming in the Sound of Music

Mondsee Cathedral was once the heart of an important monastery and was founded in 748 A.D. on the ruins of a Roman settlement. It influenced the culture of the Salzkammergut for more than thousand years. The oldest German translation of the Bible was written here - the Mondsee Matthew. The pompous, baroque interior decoration was affected by the painter and sculptor Meinrad Guggenbichler (1649-1723). Nowadays the mondsee cathedral is one of the most important art treasures of Austria because it is one of the oldest collegiate church. 2005 Mondsee Cathedral received the title of a papal Basilika minor. Maria and Baron von Trapp Wedding scene In Mondsee Cathedral the film wedding between Julie Andrews as Maria and Christopher Plummer as the Baron von Trapp took place. Maria, led by Liesl, walked down the aisle to meet the Baron von Trapp in front of the main altar. The first time they filmed the wedding scene between the Baron von Trapp and Maria, there was nobody at the altar to wed them when they reached the top of the stairs - someone had forgotten to summon the actor playing the bishop. According to Julie Andrews, the real bishop of Salzburg is seen in the movie.
