Moenchsberg and Burgberg mountains surround the Old Town of Salzburg with its arcade courtyards, Baroque churches, palaces and spacious places.

Visitors should visit the Mirabell Garden and Schloss Hellbrunn Palace, and take a stroll through Getreidegasse, which used to be Salzburg´s main road. Mozart was born in Getreidegasse n° 9, which makes the house a popular attraction. Feste Hohensalzburg castle towers above the town as a symbol of power which was brought about the town thanks to its salt and silver mines.

Festung Hohensalzburg

Hohensalzburg Fortress was originally constructed in 1077, but the building work was only completed in the 17th century. The Fortress is Salzbug´s landmark and also the largest citadel in Central Europe to have completely survived.

Salzburger Dom

Salzburg’s Cathedral is the largest of the city’s 36 churches. The first church to be erected on this site dates back to 774. Following the destruction of the medieval cathedral by fire in 1598, the reconstruction was begun to plans by the architect Santino Solari in the early Baroque style with Roman architectural themes. The consecration took place during the chaos of the Thirty Year’s War.

Mozart Geburtshaus

Born in 1756, Joannes Christosomos Wolfgang Theophulis Mozart to Leopold and Anna Maria Mozart on January 27 1756, Mozart is one of the most famous musicians of all times. The musical genius was born in Getreidegasse 9 in Salzburg, known today as Mozarts Geburtshaus (Mozart’s Birthplace), where the family lived from 1747 until 1773 when the family moved to a house in Makartplatz which is known today as Mozart Wohnhaus (Mozart’s Residence), where they remained until 1787. Both houses are now popular museums. Most of Mozart’s Residence was destroyed by a bomb in 1944; the building has however been restored to its original glory by the Mozarteum Foundation.
